Heal Thyself!

Heal Thyself is the name of a book written by Dr. Edward Bach, creator of the Bach Flower Remedy System of Natural Healing; this is one of the main holistic modalities I utilize in my practice.  I have spent the last 15 years in the role of holistic practitioner, facilitator and shaman.  At the core of this work is the understanding that we all have the innate ability to heal ourselves.  It is through the process of self-exploration and increased awareness that we can find the resources and tools to support us on our journey of transformation and healing.

Here are some of Dr. Bach’s words from Heal Thyself, first published in 1931:

“Disease is in essence the result of conflict between Soul and Mind, and will never be eradicated except by spiritual and mental effort.  Such efforts, if properly made with understanding as we shall see later, can cure and prevent disease by removing those basic factors which are its primary cause.”

“Suffering is a corrective to point out a lesson which by other means we have failed to grasp, and never can it be eradicated until that lesson is learnt.  Let it also be known that in those who understand and are able to read the significance of premonitory symptoms, disease may be prevented before its onset or aborted in its earlier stages if the proper corrective spiritual and mental efforts be undertaken.  Nor need any case despair, however severe, for the fact that the individual is still granted physical life indicates that the Soul who rules is not without hope.”

“The development of Love brings us to the realisation of Unity, of the truth that one and all of us are of the One Great Creation.  The cause of all our troubles is self and separateness, and this vanishes as soon as Love and the knowledge of the great Unity become part of our natures.”

I have found the message of “Heal Thyself”, to be at the core of my personal experience.  I would like to share with you a bit about my journey and how I came to the field of holistic health.

Amazingly, this path began for me at the age of 11.  I had a very inquisitive nature and I was an avid reader, often finishing a book a day.  I had a developed a propensity to peruse any bookcase that I came across to see what titles jumped out at me – I still do this today! One summer while spending some time at grandparents apartment in Queens, NY, I was looking through their books, which at that point, I knew quite well, but I happened upon a book, I had not seen before.  It was back a bit, wedged in between two other big books, The Joy of Cooking by Julia Child, and a copy of the Talmud, a Jewish text, that my great-grandfather had brought with him from Eastern Europe.  

For some unknown reason, I was drawn to the this little red-covered book, Healing Yourself with Foot Reflexology by Mildred Carter.  This seemingly random choice actually opened a big door for me.  As I read it, I began to apply the techniques of Reflexology, an ancient practice which uses pressure points on the hands, feet and ears to support health and wellness. It’s been around for thousands of years.  I was amazed to see that by pressing a few simple points on my body, I could feel differently.  I found I was able to ease headaches, quell sinus/allergy issues and lessen stress and anxiety, just by holding a few points on the body.  I was truly amazed.

When I was 14 years old, my cousin, who had been called Zed all his life, suddenly returned from India with a new name, Vijay, which means strong or victorious.  He shared that he was given this name by his guru, or spiritual teacher Osho.  He talked a lot about yoga and meditation and although he did not show me what this was, I was very intrigued.  He seemed so different, so much calmer, and more vibrant.  Once again my curiosity and my bookishness got me going.  I raced to the library and found all of the books I could on meditation and yoga.  Surprisingly, for 1981, the Paramus, NJ library, had quite a selection, and I was able to begin to explore a practice yoga and meditation within a just few days.

Once again I found that I was learning and growing and aware of my own innate ability to be clearer, calmer and more focused.  I came to experience the flow of energy in the body through yoga and the power of using the breath and awareness to create a change in my experience.  This was an amazing gift to have as a teenager.  I continued to learn and explore over the next few years.  Although a seemingly random experience, I credit developing these foundational practices in my survival through a very traumatic time growing up with a parent with schizophrenia.  And, they have continued to be a part of my life ever since. 

The awareness that I had gained as a teenager was also helpful when I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia at age 20.  This term was quite new at that time and conventional medicine did not have a lot of understanding about the condition.  In some ways, it is still a bit of an enigma today.  The only treatment at that time was to take heavy pain medication and anti-depressants.   I found myself in a place where I was physically in a lot of pain, highly fatigued and very despondent due to the limitations that I experienced. I did not find any medication really helpful and at age 20, having to drop out of college due to my illness, I felt certain I needed to find a my own solution.

So, having the basic awareness that I already had, that healing and change or at least what I call in my work, “a state change” was possible, I began a journey that took me most of a decade.  At the time I did not know it, but this journey was really a holistic exploration of life and healing.  As I explored a variety of modalities to help ease the symptoms of Fibromyalgia, I came to understand that for true change and healing to occur, it is key to embrace a holistic approach to not only health and to life itself.

What is a holistic approach to healing?

Holistic approaches focus on the whole person rather than just on an symptom, illness or specific aspect.  Holistic healing focuses on supporting a person in body, mind, emotion and spirit, acknowledging these elements of a person are interconnected and need to be supported, balanced and integrated to maintain overall health and well-being.  So, when one part of the body or mind is out of balance, it is understood that can affect the whole person and be a factor in disease.  Learn more

I spent the better part of a decade, exploring various approaches and modalities that addressed body, mind, emotion and spirit.  At the time, I didn’t know what I was doing was holistic, I was just trying to find things that helped me to feel better and to heal.

I focused on my body with diet, nutrition, supplements, bodywork and chiropractic care.  

I focused on my mind by exploring beliefs that were not supporting my well-being and worked to reduce the stressors in my life.  

I focused on my emotions, at first through therapy and later when I came to work with the Bach Flower Remedies, which are flower essences that support emotional health and balance.  At this point, I came to understand the role of emotions in the disease process and particularly how the impact of trauma was a factor in my physical experience of Fibromyalgia. 

I focused on spirituality and found ways to foster a sense of connection to myself, others and the world.  Finally, I came to study Shamanism, which is another ancient practice of healing, that has since become the heart of my life and my work as it embodies a holistic approach, which I have come to believe is key to living and being healthy, happy and vibrant.  It is based on the interconnectedness of all things – the “Unity” of which Dr. Bach speaks of in Heal Thyself. 

It has been over 16 years that I have been free of the symptoms of Fibromyalgia.  I credit this to embracing a holistic approach to health and wellness.  And, it was this exploration that lead me into the field of holistic healing.  As I learned and improved, I began to study some of the modalities, which supported me.  I felt strongly about sharing my experience and learning with others, particularly in terms of the importance of considering body, mind, emotion and spirit and the interconnectedness of these parts of ourselves in experiencing happiness and well-being.

I continue to explore resources and tools that support wellness for myself and for those I work with.  In my role as holistic practitioner, facilitator and shaman, I begin by introducing my clients to a holistic approach and asking how they care for their body, mind, emotions and spirit as it is my hope to support and awaken the healer within them.  There is no magic formula or pill; each person needs to know themselves and to seek their own innate wisdom for healing.  In the words of the great medical doctor, Albert Schweitzer:

 “The shaman succeeds for the same reason all the rest of us (doctors) succeed.  Each patient carries his own doctor inside him.  They come to us not knowing this truth.  We are at our best when we give the doctor who resides within each patient a chance to go to work.”

Bach Flower Remedy Of The Month: Elm ~ The Remedy For Overwhelm

As we move deeper into Autumn, the days grow darker and the temperature colder.  There is a natural sense of moving inward that we can see by the changes in the natural world.  In Chinese Medicine this is understood as the shift from the most Yang/Outer state, which occurs in Summer to the most Yin/Inner time of year, which occurs in Winter.  This period of transformation can sometimes be felt as a feeling of compression or contraction of energy.

These particular seasonal changes are often accompanied by the what many folks experience as the most busy season of the year.  It starts with returning to school and work in September and escalates with the holiday season in November and December.  In my years as a holistic practitioner, I have noticed that it is very common for people to feel a strong sense of overwhelm this time of year.  This is not surprising given the busyness of the season combined with the natural inclination to begin to slow down and go within as we move toward Winter.

The Bach Flower Remedies can be a wonderful support for any type of transition including seasonal ones.  In addition to addressing specific emotions or personality traits, one of the benefits the remedies offer is the overall strengthening of our energy system; this stems from the vibrational nature of their effect.  That combined with a focus on our individual challenges, makes the Bach Flower Remedies a powerful tool for balance and well-being.  

Last Autumn I shared a post on Star of Bethlehem: The Remedy of Comfort and it’s benefits for the feelings of loss and grief that may arise as begin our seasonal descent.  Today, I’d like to highlight another remedy that can be beneficial this time of year and beyond ~ Elm, the remedy for overwhelm!

In his book, The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies, Dr. Bach describes Elm as follows:

“Those who are doing good work, are following the calling of their life and who hope to do something of importance, and this often for the benefit of humanity. At times there may be periods of depression when they feel that the task they have undertaken is too difficult, and not within the power of a human being.”

Here are some questions to explore to see if Elm may be beneficial for you at this time:

  • Are you feeling a sense of overwhelm?
  • Do you feel that all that is on your plate is just too much for one human being?
  • Is there a sense you are inadequate in the face of your responsibilities?
  • Do you become despondent when faced with the magnitude of your responsibilities?
  • Do you tend to experience temporary exhaustion from over striving toward perfection?
  • Do you tend to overextend or over-commitment and then feel incapable of completing the tasks?
  • Are you too altruistic for your own good, neglecting self-care to serve or help others?
  • Do you suddenly feel unable to cope?

Elm has many benefits that can help to ease our feelings of overwhelm and regain energy and focus.  These include:

  • A sense of being capable, efficient and intuitive
  • An ability to see problems in their perspective
  • Feeling an inner conviction that help will the there when needed
  • Developing positive awareness around responsibilities
  • Renewing leadership and decision-making abilities
  • strengthening self-assurance and confidence

It is important to recognize that the Elm type tends to be altruistic and their overwork may come from wanting to help or serve others.  One of the ways this can manifest during the holiday season is by feeling the need to show up for family and friends in a particular way or more than we can hold energetically.  Everyone is different and needs a rhythm that supports their own health and well-being.  It can be easy to get off course or to become overwhelmed when life and work demands so much of us.  Elm is a remedy that can help restore balance and strength.

Bach Remedies

It’s that time of year again!  The cold air is descending upon us and many in the US experienced their first snow of the season this weekend.  The daylight hours are quickly getting shorter.  Darkness is beginning to reign supreme from now through the Winter Solstice, the most Yin time of year.   Energetically, we, too, are shifting just as nature is.  As we are moving toward a more Yin/Inner state it is not uncommon to experience a sense of feeling out of balance or what some folks call “the seasonal blues”.

During times of seasonal changes, and particularly in the colder, darker winter months, it is important to honor our own natural rhythms, to take extra time for self-care and get plenty of rest.  It’s also good to find tools that support an experience of balance and well-being.  Last year around this time, I shared a post on How To Beat The Seasonal Blues With The Bach Flower Remedies.  The Bach Flower Remedies are one of the resources in my holistic toolbox that I have utilized both personally and professionally for over 15 years.  I find them an incredible support for adjusting to seasonal changes and “the blues” that may come this time of year or anytime.

Back To School ~ Bach Flower Remedies For Kids

back-to-schoolBack To School is a transitional time that can be stressful for kids and parents.  Changes can include new situations, such a new school, teacher or class as well as a significant change in routine from summer.  Finding natural support to ease the stress that can be caused by transition can help to make school a more positive experience.   I am excited to share with you some ways that the Bach Flower Remedies can be a resources for kids during Back To School time and beyond.  The remedies can actually offer a wonderful support for the ups and downs of childhood and adolescence.

The Bach Flower Repertoire is composed of 38 different flower essences, which offer a holistic resource that can help to strengthen our ability move more easily in the world, to have healthier relationships, and to experience greater joy and ease of well-being.  They are a gentle, safe and natural method of healing.  The remedies work to restore balance between mind and body by transmitting negative emotions, such as fear, sadness and overwhelm into positive ones, such as calm, joy and ease.  These negative emotions can interfere with our sense of balance, health and overall ease of well-being.  The remedies can also assist in resolving trauma and stress from life experiences as well as aiding us as we move through change and transitions.

Childhood is a time of continual growth and development.  Along with the joy that childhood can bring, it can also be a time of awkwardness, discomfort and insecurity.  The Bach Flower Remedies can help children to feel more balanced emotionally and can assist in relieving some of the growing pains of childhood.  They offer a completely natural way to create greater ease during this transitional time in life.  And, Back To School is a time of year that transitions are heightened.  There is a busyness that occurs for kids and parents, too!

Bach Flowers have been used to assist with childhood issues such as fear, nightmares, shyness, neediness, temper tantrums, growing pains and situational changes.   They can also help with issues such as ADD or ADHD, anxiety, over sensitivity and relieving traumatic experiences.  Often, issues and conditions that develop in childhood progress if left unresolved.  By addressing the needs of a child early on, the Bach Flower Remedies can help to support a happier, more balanced childhood as well as foster lifelong health and well-being.

By studying vibrational medicine and native British flowers, Dr. Edward Bach, creator of the remedies, discovered that certain plant essences have a profound healing effect on the mind.  He observed that the remedies affected a deep personal transformation in his patients’ character and behavior patterns, which not only prevented disease but also left the patient happier and more integrated.  According to Dr. Bach, certain flowers are of a higher order.  He believed that these healing plants addressed disharmony within the mental and spiritual aspects of our being by flooding our energy field with higher frequencies and thereby aligning our whole being.  They actually transmute negative energies into positive ones.  They do not mask the effects of the emotions, but provide a catalyst for change to occur from within.

Below I share some remedies that can be particularly helpful for children, but it is good to remember that each child is different.   Some of the remedies really help to ease change and transition, which is at the heart of Back To School time.  The remedies are natural and safe for all ages, even babies, so if transitional stress seems like a factor for your child or for you, I encourage you to give the remedies a try.

Here are some specific remedies that can be particularly helpful for children:

Rescue Remedy™ is the most well-known Bach Flower Remedy and is a great tool to have on hand for children. It is a combination of five remedies that can be used for stressful situations such as acute stress, hearing bad news, having an accident, test anxiety, or nightmares.  It is designed for any emergency situation or acute stress.  It can help sooth a child who is crying, afraid or unable to calm down.  It is great after a sudden shock or a fall.  Just put 4 drops of Rescue in a cup of water and let your child sip on it.  Rescue Remedy is also available as a spray, pastilles or gum including an alcohol free child formula, which has a glycerin base.  This is a must have remedy for holistic medicine cabinets and a great tool for children.  Many mothers keep this remedy on hand in their purse in case of emergency.  Rescue Remedy can be a first course of action for Back To School transition stress.

Walnut is a remedy that supports change and transition in many ways.  This may help when a child goes to school for the first time or goes to a new school or program.  It can also help in adjusting to any changes in the home or family.  It is beneficial for teething, the arrival of a new sibling, puberty, or any situation when a child is being affected by or reacting to change.  Walnut helps to move through transitions more smoothly.  It is also helpful for children who are very sensitive emotionally or energetically.  Read more about Walnut…

Mimulus can help children who are fearful and shy.  It can help those who may be afraid to sleep in the dark or alone.  It helps with fear of outside things such as dogs, spiders or going to the doctor.  It can also be helpful for separation anxiety.  A good indicator is when a child is shy, quiet or timid as well as dealing with fear about specific things as mentioned above.  Mimulus can help a child to have more confidence and courage.

Aspen can help children with nightmares or who are anxious without knowing why.  They are afraid but for no known reason.  This relates more to an uncertain fear or a sense of apprehension whereas Mimulus relates to more specific or identifiable fears.  Sometimes a child has a general sense of apprehension or a “spooky” kind of fear.  It can be particularly helpful after waking from a bad dream.  Aspen can help to ease this sense of uncertainty bringing a sense of inner peace and calm.

Impatiens can help children who get easily frustrated with themselves or others.  This can come from things not moving fast enough or things not happening as fast as they would like them to.  For children or babies who are restless, irritable and may toss and turn at night, Impatiens can help to bring calm and relaxation.

Vervain can help with tension, eagerness and over-excitement.  It can help hyperactive children to be calmer.  For an overly enthusiastic child, it can help bring balance.  It is considered a drive remedy.  It is good to be driven but sometimes we can tend to be over-driven or overly energetic.  For children, who have this excessive energy or excitement, Vervain can help to bring calm and balance.

Larch is a remedy that promotes self-confidence.  This remedy helps your child when feeling a lack of self-confidence or self-esteem.  If a child seems to doubt their abilities and feel not good enough to succeed or maybe doesn’t even try because they expect failure, Larch can help.  It soothes any doubt your child many have and helps develop a strong sense of self-esteem and  confidence.  This can be an ongoing pattern to address or helpful at a time when a child is facing a specific challenge such as a test or tournament.

Crab Apple is considered the “cleansing” remedy.  This refers to mind and body.  Crab apple can be helpful for children and particularly adolescents with body issues; they may have a poor self-image, a sense of discomfort or feeling that something is wrong with them physically.  Although we don’t specifically treat for physical conditions with the Bach Flowers, Crab Apple can also be helpful when a child is having skin related issues such as eczema, psoriasis or other skin irritations.  Crab apple can help to ease the sense of body discomfort that accompanies these issues. It can also be helpful for children who tend to be obsessive about cleanliness or neatness.

And, there are over 30 other remedies that might be indicated for an individual based on what they are feeling and experiencing at any point in a time.  Working with a practitioner can offer support in choosing beneficial remedies and learning how to work with them for your self or your family.  Dr. Bach believed that the remedies are meant as a self-healing tool and so are simple to use.  The Bach Flower Remedies are all natural; they can do no harm.  If the wrong remedy is chosen, it has no ill effect.

The remedies are administered orally.  Two drops of each essence can be put in a 1 oz. dropper bottle with spring water for ongoing treatment, taken directly or put in a cup of water and sipped.  For Rescue Remedy, 4 drops are used.  For children, a short course of treatment, even a single dose can be beneficial.  It is often beneficial for other members of the family to be treated as in many cases the child is reflecting or reacting to family challenges or dynamics.

Dr. Bach designed the Bach Flower Remedies to be accessible to everyone.  One of his core concepts was “Heal Thyself”, as he believed that we all have the ability to heal ourselves.  The remedies are intended to be a natural support to our own innate healing process.  Children can truly benefit from this wonderful system of healing as they are able to respond quickly to the effects of the remedies.  They are then able to experience greater happiness and overall ease of well-being as they move through the ups and downs of childhood that occur at Back To School time and beyond!

I am excited to share with you my recent interview with Dan Neuffer of CFS Unravelled.  Dan is committed to sharing resources and stories to inspire hope and support for recovery from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Fibromyalgia.
 
I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia at age 20 and spent most of a decade searching for healing and recovery.  It was this exploration and discovering that recovery was possible through an alternative and holistic approach that ultimately led me to the path as a holistic practitioner. facilitator and educator.
 
By age 28, I had shifted from dropping out of college, living in extreme physical pain and barely being able to get out of bed on many days, to becoming a full-time licensed massage therapist.  My healing continued for a few more years as I came to see the need to focus on emotional healing in an energetic way.   I discovered the Bach Flower Remedies and worked with them for over  a year – this is when I became symptom free of Fibromyalgia.
Although my personal focus was on healing through Fibroymyalgia, my journey revealed to me the importance of taking a holistic approach – one that addresses body , mind, emotion and spirit for healing and for well-being.  I learned firsthand the importance of Dr. Bach’s words:

“Treat the whole person, not the disease.”

I also came to understand that what works for one person, may not work for another.  During and after my recovery, I studied a number of the modalities that supported me as well as other holistic tools.  Some of these include Reiki, Massage & Bodywork, Nutrition, Bach Flower Remedies, Zero Balancing,  PEER Emotional Release Work,  and Holistic Self-Care.  Eventually, Shamanic Healing became the heart of my work as I found it creates a powerful foundation for returning us to our natural state of wholeness.  In my work with clients, I offer an integrative approach to meet each person where they are and to support a shift into greater balance,  joy and ease of well-being.

Bach Flower Of The Month: Sweet Chestnut ~ Easing Anguish & Sorrow

Sweet Chestnut

The Bach Flower Remedy System Of Healing is composed of 38 different flower essences developed by the visionary Dr. Edward Bach.  The system is based on Dr. Bach’s philosophy developed from learning that came through a long career in medical research, working as a physician and from spiritual studies.   This simple, yet powerful approach is based on the idea that humans are all innately perfect and at the core are spiritual beings.

Dr. Bach saw disease as the result of a conflict between our spiritual and mortal selves.  He held that in order to achieve health, happiness and ease of well-being, we must be in harmony with our own essential nature and follow the path that we feel most called to in our lives and our work.   According to Dr. Bach, 

“Disease is the reaction to interferences.  This is temporary failure and unhappiness and this occurs when we allow others to interfere with our purpose in life and implant in our minds doubt, or fear, or indifference.” 

After many years of treating patients, Dr. Bach abandoned all conventional medical treatments instead choosing to use nature’s “medicine”.  He felt that the healing benefits of flowers and plants were a divine gift and that no special knowledge or medical training was needed to find relief from suffering.  He believed it was necessary to treat the whole person not the disease and he defined seven main categories of imbalances which include:

  • Fear 
  • Uncertainty
  • Insufficient Interest In Present Circumstances
  • Loneliness
  • Oversensitivity To Influences & Ideas
  • Despondency Or Despair
  • Over-Care For The Welfare Of Others

He also identified seven stages in healing disease:

  • Peace
  • Hope
  • Joy
  • Faith
  • Love
  • Certainty
  • Wisdom
  • Love

The Bach Flower Remedies bring these positive qualities vibrationally into our energy field and help to transmute interferences and limiting patterns, feelings and beliefs so that we may connect with our true essence of perfection.

In my work as a Bach Flower Remedy practitioner over the last 15 years, I have come to see 5 specific remedies as being beneficial for what we might term “depressive” feelings.  I’d like to stress that in the Bach System and other holistic modalities, we look at indicating factors but are not treating based on a diagnosis whether for a physical or mental health related condition.  Rather, we are addressing the whole person and looking for areas of interference or imbalance to support a return to wholeness. 

The remedies which I consider when someone reports experiencing feelings of depression are:

In a consultation, all aspects of a person are considered.  Often even though the motivator for seeking support may be “depressive” feelings or another specific emotional state, it is essential to consider other emotions or personality traits to ultimately uncover the root cause an individual’s suffering or discomfort. 

With 38 different remedies, there are actually over a million possible combinations and it can be beneficial to seek the support of a practitioner or take a course to initially to learn how the remedies work and how to treat with them.

It’s been a few months since I have included a Bach Flower Of The Month post.  The intention of these posts is to offer a way to learn about the remedies and explore working with them.  If you feel you need additional support, I am available for consultations by Phone/Skype or In Person in Annapolis, MD.

Today, I would like to highlight Sweet Chestnut.  This remedy is in the category of Despondency Or Despair; I would add that it is one of the stronger remedies in that category.  It’s indication according to Dr. Bach is as follows:

“For those moments which happen to some people when the anguish is so great as to seem unbearable.  When mind or body feels as if it has borne to the uttermost limit of its endurance, and that now it must give way.  When it seems there is nothing but destruction and annihilation left to face.”

This came up for me this month when I learned of the sudden passing of a dear friend.  Like many of us, I have gone through some periods when losses were compounded.  Since then, I have found that a new loss can easily stir those feelings and at times put me into a state where I feel I have endured all I can.  Often, this state is more acute and doesn’t last too long, especially when supported with Sweet Chestnut remedy, but when we are in it – it is overwhelming.  Any state such as this may dissipate on it’s own but the remedy can help to ease through the extreme anguish that can arise.  At some point, a shift happens into a lesser state of emotion but still the feelings of loss and grief are at the surface.  This is what I experienced this month and found that by taking Sweet Chestnut I was able to move through my emotional experience more easily.  I then continued with Star of Bethlehem for loss and grief.

Here are some of the indicating factors of Sweet Chestnut:

  • Extreme mental and/or emotional anguish
  • Intense sorrow
  • Feeling you have endured all you can bear
  • Uncontrollable crying or tears
  • Feeling forsaken by God/Creator
  • On the verge of a nervous breakdown
  • Overwhelming feelings after a huge loss or life challenge
  • Fear of being abandoned
  • A sense of emptiness due to bereavement
  • Utter dejection
  • Feeling depleted of energy due to emotional overwhelm
  • Feelings of helplessness
  • Overwhelming loneliness

Some of the benefits that come from working with Sweet Chestnut include:

Bach Flower Of The Month: Wild Oat ~ The Remedy Of Soul Purpose

I have been a Bach Flower practitioner for 15 years and have been taking the remedies for even longer.  They were a major part of my process of healing through Fibromyalgia and although I came to them to address a specific issue in my life, over the years I have come to know them as tool to be used for lifelong transformation and healing.  There are 38 different flower essences in the Bach Flower System.  Most folks are familiar with the well-known Rescue Remedy, the only pre-blended Bach Flower Remedy.  With this repertoire of 38 remedies, there are well over a million possible combinations to address each individual at each point in their lives.

The remedies follow the philosophy of Dr. Bach and holistic medicine in that we are treating the whole person, not a specific symptom or disease.  Usually at any given time there are 5 – 7 remedies that are indicated for a person based on what they are experiencing in the lives, their personality traits and emotional state.  Also, each person has two type remedies which are ones they carry throughout their lifetime.  In a sense, this is a pattern that their soul has chosen to work through to have the experiences necessary for their evolution.  It often takes a long time to determine one’s type remedies and I have only in the last couple of years come to know mine.

While taking the remedies, one is not so focused on identifying their type but on addressing what is at the surface; looking at what they are experiencing most strongly on a daily basis is key to selecting the most beneficial remedies.  This is one of the reasons the remedies are so effective – they are addressing what is at the surface and they help to settle whatever feelings and patterns are currently activated by transmuting them so our next layer can emerge.  This is truly an evolutionary process.

At some point an awareness comes that a particular remedy is strongest over time.  After many years of exploration and only when I completed my final training with the Bach Centre in 2011 to become a BFRP (Bach Flower Registered Practitioner), did I come to recognize that Wild Oat is one of my two type remedies.  I have always had a fondness for this remedy and have benefited from it personally and continue to today.  I have also seen tremendous changes occur for folks who take Wild Oat when indicated whether it is someone going through a big life transition, trying to choose their course of study or needing to change careers and/or struggling to know which path to take.   For some this will be indicated at various times in life due to transitions or it may be an overall pattern.

Here is Dr. Bach’s description of Wild Oat from his book The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies:

“Those who have ambitions to do something of prominence in life, who wish to have much experience, and to enjoy all that which is possible for them, to take life to the full.  Their difficulty is to determine what occupation to follow; as although their ambitions are strong, they have no calling which appeals to them above all others.  This may cause delay and dissatisfaction.

I have always been someone who is called to do many things and I love each of them just as much. I have found as a result I tend to fit the description to a tee!  Part of this has to do with being passionate about many things.  I have found that my work as a shaman, holistic practitioner, facilitator, speaker, and writer suits me because there is diversity in what I do and who I work with, but still, I tend to feel there is something more.  Maybe there is something that everything I am now doing is leading to or maybe one path will become illuminated above all others at some point.  When I am feeling uncertain about where to put my energy, Wild Oat is my saviour. And, since I have been taking it as a type remedy, I have gotten much more clarity about my life and my work.  Actually, The Heart Of Awakening  Blog was created during this time!

Here are some questions to ask to see if Wild Oat is indicated:

  • Are you feeling like you have come to a crossroads in life?
  • Do you have issues with finding your true life work, mission, purpose, or calling?
  • Do you have a feeling that life is passing you by?
  • Are you unhappy with your current work?
  • Do you find yourself dissatisfied due to unfulfilled ambition?
  • Are you unable to choose a course of direction for your life?
  • Does it feel like you’re stuck in rut with your work or creativity?
  • Do you lack a sense of ambition or achievement?
  • In some way, do you feel like a ‘lost soul’?
  • Are there so many things you are called to do, that you are unable to focus or progress in any one thing?
  • Are you searching for your “niche” in life?

Wild Oat is a remedy of Soul Purpose.  Dr. Bach not only created the remedies themselves, but left us with a body of writing that is a great guide for living as a spiritual being on earth.  He created the remedies to support our journey in transformation and awakening.  Dr. Bach saw disease and suffering as a sign we are out of alignment with our Higher Self.  There is so much wisdom and understanding to be learned through exploring Dr. Bach’s philosophy and life.  Here is some of what he shares about soul purpose:

“Many of us in our childhood and early life are much nearer to our own Soul than we are in later years, and have then clearer ideas of our work in life, the endeavours we are expected to make and the character we are required to develop.  The reason for this is that the materialism and circumstances of our age, and the personalities with whom we associate, lead us away from the voice of our Higher Self and bind us firmly to the commonplace with its lack of ideals, all too evident in this civilization.”

In our modern world, it is easy to be led away from the deeper desires of our Soul.  Wild Oat can help you to find your true purpose or mission in life.  It can be helpful in resolving occupational issues, finding fulfillment with your work and accessing your creative fire.  In essence, it is helping you to become receptive to the wisdom of your higher self and inner guidance concerning what direction is most in alignment with your Soul.  It offers insight into the path ahead with clarity and purpose.

Wild Oat may also be used as a Polycrest remedy.  This is a remedy that helps to move a case forward when it is unclear what remedies are to be taken.  This may occur between taking a blend of remedies or when there is so much happening at the surface that is unclear which remedies are indicated.  The two remedies that Dr. Bach indicated to use as a Polycrest are Wild Oat and Holly.  Wild Oat is indicated for a person who appear more quiet and passive; they maybe more of an introvert.  Holly is indicated for a person who is more active, intense and extroverted.  The Polycrest is taken in the same way as a regular remedy until the next layer emerges; this may be indicated by a wave of emotion or greater clarity about what issues need to be addressed.

As you can see there are many nuances to the Bach Flower Remedies.  Dr. Bach created them to be used by the practitioner and the layperson; they are considered a complete self-healing system.  In the later years of his work, Dr. Bach treated with the Bach Flower Remedies alone giving up conventional medicine to treat the whole person; he had tremendous success!  Sometimes, it can be beneficial to work with a practitioner for a period of time to experience how the remedies work and learn how to use them effectively or you may just wish to explore on your own.  It’s important to know, the remedies can do no harm as they work vibrationally rather than medicinally.

It’s hard to believe that it’s not even been 2 years since I started The Heart Of Awakening Blog.  It’s been a joy to journey and explore with folks from all over the world who are interested in transformation and healing.  This year, I have found much more of a community forming here on HOA and I have some new ideas to expand that in 2014.

As we are moving toward to close of the year, I just thought to share the top 13 posts from 2013.  This year marked the third annual May Is For Metta virtual sangha (2 years on HOA) and I plan to continue this in 2014.  I’ve also added some new features this year including the Bach Flower Of The Month post and a Poem Of The Week.  As you can probably tell by now, I live on spirit time and so my week’s and months may vary! but I hope you have enjoyed these additions.  My intention is to share resources, tools and inspiration to support The Heart Of Awakening mission.

How To Beat The Seasonal Blues With The Bach Flower Remedies

Many people experience the blues during the change of seasons.  This seems particularly strong when transitioning from winter to spring and summer to fall.  It is during these times of the year that there is the biggest shift in energies as we move from yin to yang (inner to outer) or yang to yin (outer to inner).  We can also see how in the spring there is a birthing process that occurs in nature and in the autumn, there is a dying process.  This occurs in nature and it is something we experience in ourselves, too.

These transitional times of year tend to stir lots of emotions and can be a powerful time to let go of feelings, patterns and beliefs, which no longer serve us.  Although letting go can be a positive thing, it can also bring up a sense of loss.  This can have to do with feeling loss for a part of ourselves, a way of life we have known or it can have to do with feeling there is something we are longing for in our lives that is missing.  Transition itself can be something that brings up a sense of loss as we move from one way of being to another.

When I was younger, I struggled with feelings of depression.  I found these seasonal transitions to be one of the most challenging times of year, often dropping into an almost suicide-like depression.  It took me many years of working on myself and my healing process to understand how the energetic shifts of nature were affecting me.  I came to know and expect the coming changes of the seasons as a time when my emotions would stir and need attention, just as a garden needs tending at various times of year.

As human beings, living in a modern, technological society, we have a tendency to separate ourselves from the natural world.  This disconnection does us a disservice to ourselves and often keeps us from experiencing the deeper essence of who we are.  As we begin to embrace ourselves as part of the natural order of things and to work with the constantly changing energies of nature, we have an opportunity to move into greater balance, joy and ease of well-being.  To achieve this, it is important to find practices and tools that help to deepen our connection to the natural world and make them a  part of our ongoing practice of self-care and personal growth.

One of the best tools I have found to support these seasonal transitions as well as to help us be in greater harmony overall are the Bach Flower Remedies.  Created by the visionary Dr. Edward Bach, the Bach Flower Remedies are flower essences that support emotional balance and ease of well-being.  They work vibrationally to bring a positive energy or quality from a particular flower into our energy field, transmuting an aspect of ourselves that is out of harmony or alignment with our soul purpose and with the unity of all things.  By nature, the remedies connect us to the healing energy of the natural world and to our own innate healing abilities.  (Read my post The Bach Flower Remedies: A Tool For Transformation for an overview of the Bach Flower Remedies).

One of Dr. Bach’s core messages is to “treat the person, not the disease”.  In working with the Bach Flower Remedies, we do not diagnose or address any specific medical or mental condition.  We look at each person individually – where they are in the moment, what they are experiencing and what feelings are at the surface on a daily basis.  When we speak of depression or the blues in the Bach Flower System, we are talking about depressive feelings, despondency, sadness, etc.  It is important to acknowledge that these are natural feelings to have at various times in our lives and that some people are more predisposed to certain feelings and personality traits, which is often an indication of where our personal healing work lies.

In the Bach Flower System, there are a number of remedies that address “the blues”; these relate to how a person experiences feelings of despondency and despair.  Also, in looking at seasonal blues, it may be important to address adjusting to transition itself as well as some of the effects of transition such as fatigue.  Here are some remedies, which may be beneficial in providing support during seasonal transitions and beyond:

Star of Bethlehem is for sorrow, grief, sadness and loss.  Autumn is a time when these types of feelings can tend to be at the surface, just as nature is going through a “dying” process, we can tend to feel a sense of loss.  Star of Bethlehem also is a remedy for trauma, both current and past.  (Learn more about Star Of Bethlehem: The Remedy Of Comfort)

Gentian is for a sense of discouragement.  This tends to come from feelings of setback, delays, failures or difficulties that come from a known reason such as life changes (e.g loss of a job/relationship, mid-life crisis, menopause, etc.)  It may include feeling easily dejected, doubtful and disappointed.  There can also be a strong tendency toward pessimism connected with the Gentian state.

Gorse is for hopelessness and despair.  There is a feeling that nothing more can be done; often a person feels resigned or has given up in some way, particularly on the inside.  A Gorse state may exhibit a “what’s the use” attitude; it is not uncommon for people in this state to be suffering from a chronic disease with a feeling like they have tried everything that can be done and there is just no more hope.

Sweet Chestnut is for a sense of deep anguish; there is a feeling that one has reached their limits of endurance.  This type tends to feel as if the very foundation of their life has been torn away and they can bear no more loss.  It is akin to the “dark night of the soul”.

Mustard is for a black gloom depression that tends to come and go for no known reason. This can be a deep gloom or feeling of melancholy that is often described as a dark cloud that descends on a person for a time and then just as magically disappears for no reason, but the pattern is one that perpetuates.  The person in this state is at the mercy of their feelings until they move out on their own accord and they feel they are back in the blue skies and sunshine once again.

Walnut is the remedy of change and transition.   It can be of great support when we are having difficulty adjusting to a transition.  This can include seasonal changes, life stages such as adolescence or menopause, and life changes such as a new job, marriage, birth of child, etc.  This remedy is also known as the great “spellbreaker” of the past and can support us as we move out of outmoded patterns, feelings and beliefs, which can be part of our seasonal letting go process. Finally, I just like to mention that often during these seasonal transitions, there is a tendency to feel fatigue.  Most people view fatigue as something being wrong, but I’d like to suggest that particularly in times of transition, added rest is what we need.  Rest creates time and space for the integration of all that we are experiencing on the levels of body, mind, emotion and spirit.  Particularly, in this shift toward winter, added rest is needed to support healthy immune function and overall well-being; getting adequate rest is often the best way to address our fatigue.

If fatigue is something that continues, there are two remedies that may be beneficial:

Olive is for a sense of total exhaustion with no reserve energy.  This tends to be on the physical, mental and spiritual level.  This is a deep tiredness with a feeling of being washed out.  There is a need for much sleep and rest.  

Hornbean is a remedy that supports more of a mental exhaustion.  It is kind of like that “Monday morning” feeling; there is an uncertainty of how one will manage as the day begins but usually there is enough energy to get going once we begin.

The Bach Flower Remedies offer a natural, energetic support which helps to bring us into greater alignment with our Soul, creating balance and ease of well-being.  The most important thing during seasonal transitions and really always is to listen to the needs of our body, mind, emotion and spirit.   There is so much wisdom inside of us and as we open to discovering the healer within, we move into greater harmony, joy and ease of well-being.

Bach Flower Of The Month: Star Of Bethlehem ~ The Remedy Of Comfort

I have been feeling to bring Star Of Bethlehem into the monthly posts and now is the perfect time as the energy and support it brings can really be of benefit this time of year.  As I shared in my recent post, Autumn Tips For Happy & Healthy Living, this season is one that can bring feelings of sadness, loss and grief to the surface.  Dr. Edward Bach, creator of the Bach Flower Remedies, referred to Star of Bethlehem as “the comforter and soother of pain and sorrows”.   It is one the five remedies that is part of the well-known Rescue Remedy®, which is the only pre-made composite Bach Flower Remedy designed for use in emergencies and for acute stress and it is an essential part of any holistic medicine cabinet.

In the Bach Flower System, there is a category of remedies that are indicated for Despondency and Despair; Star of Bethlehem is in that group.  This can also be defined as remedies that may support “depressive feelings”.  I say “depressive feelings” because in the Bach Flower System and other holistic modalities, we do not treat a specific disease or condition such as depression or diabetes, but we focus on the whole person.  As Dr. Bach would say, “We treat the person, not the disease.”  These types of feelings or traits are an indicator of where a person is experiencing some type of imbalance or disharmony that needs to be addressed.

In determining what Bach Flower Remedies would best support a person, the practitioner and client work collaboratively to identify emotional states and personality traits that are present at the surface.  It is by addressing this outer layer of experience – i.e. what is at the surface or being experienced on a daily basis that we begin to access where a person is out of harmony with their soul and ultimately, the greater whole.  The remedies help to soothe our imbalances and like beautiful music, bring in vibrations that harmonize our being.  As we address one layer, then another will surface, bringing to light others areas that are in need of attention and healing.

In my own healing journey and my work with others as a practitioner over the last 15 years, I have found Star Of Bethlehem to be one that is often needed.  Star of Bethlehem is indicated when there are feelings of sorrow, grief, sadness or loss at the surface as well as when there are old losses coming up that we have not grieved.  Also, as the remedy of shock and trauma, Star Of Bethlehem is highly beneficial for anyone who has experienced trauma, and although it is this can occur in varying degrees, most people have experienced some shock or trauma that has gone unresolved in their lives.

Trauma can exist on all levels – body, mind, emotion and spirit.  And, it is something that creates an imprint in our being that often stays with us until we attend to it.  Some traumas resolve themselves naturally, however, it is not uncommon for those energetic imprints to remain and lie dormant until something triggers a re-awakening signaling it is time to be resolved.  This is often experienced when we have a loss occur and the new feelings arising tap into the great pool of unresolved loss we tend to carry within ourselves.

We may think of this only in terms of emotional trauma, but this can even be seen in the case of physical traumas or injuries when suddenly the pain or restriction of an old football injury or childhood accident resurfaces.  And, from many of the case studies of Dr. Bach, it was seen that unresolved shock and trauma on any level might later manifest into a physical condition.  Star Of Bethlehem is the remedy indicated to help resolve these patterns that may be affecting us on many levels.

Dr. Bach shared the following words about the Star Of Bethlehem remedy:

“For those in great distress, under conditions which for a time produce great unhappiness.  The shock of serious news, the loss of someone dear, the fright following an accident and such like.  For those who for a time refuse to be consoled, this remedy brings comfort.”

Here are some questions to see if Star Of Bethlehem may be beneficial for you at this time:

  • Are you experiencing feelings of sorrow, grief, sadness or loss?
  • Have you had a recent loss or one from the past that you are still struggling with?
  • Do you have a tendency toward feeling despondent?
  • Have you experienced trauma or abuse?
  • Are you working to resolve the effects of past trauma or PTSD?
  • Are you in a state of shock or numbness?
  • Do you feel a sense of agony that comes from what you have experienced?
  • Are you in a grief period or in the process of healing or grieving prior losses?
  • Do you feel like you carry a thread of sadness that won’t leave?
  • Are you experiencing a seasonal type of depression with feelings of sadness, loss and grief bubbling up?

Star Of Bethlehem has many benefits that support our ability to move through shock, trauma and loss.  Here are some of the ways this remedy can provide support:

  • Neutralizes shock in any form, current or past, from bad news, accidents, losses, etc.
  • Helps to clear and release trauma
  • Eases feelings of sorrow, grief, sadness and loss
  • Supports inner child healing
  • Brings us a deep sense of comfort
  • Helps to bring us back into the body and awaken us after shock or trauma

In thinking about losses, we tend to focus on the loss that comes through a death.  It is important to consider that there are many types of losses that can affect us – the loss of relationship, a job, a home, or a phase of life.  Even when we have an experience that is positive, such as getting married or having a child, it is possible that we feel some sense of loss due to the change in our lives.  It is natural to need to give some time and space to the feelings of loss that may arise in response to the constantly changing aspects of our lives.  In these cases, Star Of Bethlehem can provide a support as can Walnut, which helps us to ease through our transitions.

Also, I’d just like to mention that Star Of Bethlehem can be highly beneficial for animals that have suffered any type of abuse or trauma.  In my work with Rescue animals, their histories are often uncertain.  Whether they have experienced abuse in their prior situation or merely the trauma of being moved from one situation to another, Star Of Bethlehem can support them.  Rescue Remedy is always a good starting point for “Rescue” animals, but treatment with Star Of Bethlehem can be a great support in the resolving the trauma an animal may be carrying and can help them to settle into a new situation with greater ease.

Bach Flower Of The Month: Walnut (The Remedy Of Change & Transition)

WalnutI have been utilizing the Bach Flower Remedies since the late 1990’s when I began working with a practitioner to help in my healing of Fibromyalgia and emotional pain.  I had been on a near decade long  journey in healing through Fibromyalgia.  With little help from conventional medicine, I began an exploratory journey into alternative and holistic treatments.  After making many changes including diet, supplements, exercise as well as spiritual practices such as yoga and meditation, I found tremendous relief from my symptoms.  I would say by the point I came to work with Bach Flowers I was about 70% symptom free.

I had some life events happen around that time that really raised my awareness of the need to address the emotional body as part of the healing process.  I had done therapy at that point, but hadn’t really addressed emotional healing in an energetic or integrated way.  The Bach Flowers really opened the door to a whole new understanding of emotions and their role in healing; and, also offered me a foundation to do some deeper emotional healing work.

After one year of treatment focused on emotional healing, which included ongoing work with the Bach Flower remedies, emotional release work and some deep inner child work, I found myself symptom free of Fibromyalgia for the first time in over a decade.  I had already been working in the field of holistic healing doing bodywork, energy work and teaching meditation.  This experience really expanded my understanding of dis-ease and the effects that emotions play in how we experience health and well-being.

I share this because this month’s remedy is one that I feel was highly beneficial in my own healing process. It continues to be one that I use personally and is one of the most frequently used remedies in my work with clients.  It supports both adjusting to existing life changes as well as moving out of old patterns, feelings and beliefs, which are keeping us from creating the changes we desire.  Although all flower essences assist with change, I consider Walnut to be the official remedy of change and transition.

Dr. Bach shared the following words about the Walnut remedy:

“For those who have definite ideals and ambitions in life and are fulfilling them, but on rare occasion are temped to be led astray from their own ideas, aim, and work by the enthusiasm, convictions, or strong opinions of others.  This remedy gives constancy and protections from outside influences.

Walnut is the remedy of advancing stages, teething, puberty, change of life.  For the big decisions made during life, such as change of religion, change of occupation, change of country.  The Remedy for those who have decided to take a great step forward in life, to break old conventions, to leave old limits and restrictions and start on a new way.  This often brings with it physical suffering because of slight regrets, heart-breakings, at the severance of old ties, old associations and old thoughts.  A great spell-breaker, both of things of the past commonly called heredity, and circumstances of the present.”

Just as the shell of the walnut is very hard and protects it’s softer center, the Walnut essence helps to strengthen and stabilize our energy field so that we are more able to hold our center and engage in the world with clarity, focus and intention.  In a sense, Walnut offers a shielding quality that helps us in holding center, maintaining our choices and flowing with changes that are occurring both inwardly and outwardly.

Walnut has many benefits that support our ability to move through change and transitions.  Some of the benefits include:

  • Provides a shielding quality that supports creating & maintaining our boundaries and borders
  • Helps protects us from the effects of outside influences
  • Eases emotional and energetic sensitivity
  • Helps to adapt to periods of change and transition including life changes and development phases
  • Helps to let go of or break old patterns, limiting beliefs and core issues which no longer serve us
  • Aids in resolving dysfunction stemming from family of origin
  • Helps acclimate to new ways of being, such as new phases of life, work, family, etc.
  • Supports spiritual transformation and growth
  • Protects from the influence of suppressive energies or parasitic infestations (including physical, mental, emotional & spiritual)
  • Supports finding and holding our center and connecting more fully to our soul purpose

Here are some questions to see if Walnut may be beneficial for you at this time:

  • Do you find it difficult to adjust to change and transition?
  • Are you feeling disoriented, out of balance or having difficulty adjusting to change?
  • Are you currently experiencing changes in life or environment such as work, school, moving, etc?
  • Are developmental changes a factor such as puberty, menopause, aging, etc?
  • Do you feel drained by other people?  Are you aware that you take on other people’s energy or emotions?
  • Are you overly sensitive to ideas and influences of others?
  • Are you moving through a time of spiritual growth and transformation?
  • Are you committed to breaking old patterns or let go of beliefs, which no longer serve you?
  • Are you actively working on healing dysfunctional family or ancestral patterns?

Working with the Walnut remedy can greatly help to ease periods of change and transition, whether we initiate them through personal work or are going through a period of life change that arises on it’s own.  Whether you choose to work with Walnut or not, I hope you will take some time to explore current transitions in your life or consider changes you might like to make.

  • Do you need to change your self-care based on recent transitions?
  • Do you need to take time to connect with nature?
  • Do you need to spend more time going within?
  • Is it time to find new tools to support transformation and healing in your life?
  • Do you have a clear sense of your soul purpose at this time?
  • What choices you are making or would you like to be making to engage in the world in a more intentional way?

Walnut reminds us that one of the ways that we can move more easily through change is to be present with it in a conscious and loving way; and, that by returning to our center, again and again, we are able to allow our deeper essence to emerge.

Seeking the Shaman Within: An Interview with Beth Terrence

My first personal encounter with shamanic practices came in 2007, in an appropriate-to-our-times trio of CDs recorded by therapist and shamanic practitioner Sandra Ingerman. It was entitled, The Soul Retrieval Journey: Seeing in the Dark.IngermanSoulRetrieval

As Ingerman defined it, “Shamanism is the first spiritual practice of human kind,” dating back at least 30,000 years. Shamanic practices are cross-cultural, with variants used in Siberia, Australia, Africa, North and South America, and parts of Europe and Asia.

The word “shaman” comes from Tungus, a Siberian tribe (today called the Evenki), and it translate as “one who sees in the dark.” That phrase resonates as shamanic work often involves going into the depths of what we don’t see in our everyday, conscious lives and bringing ideas, revelations, and more nuanced views of old experiences into our consciousness so that we can grow our awareness of ourselves.

Bach Flower Remedy Of The Month: Rock Water

I am sure some of you may be wondering how the Bach Flower Remedies fit into the vision of The Heart Of Awakening Blog.  The mission of The Heart Of Awakening Blog is to support:

The actualization of this is done through sharing explorations, ideas, and tools that support this vision.  I have found the Bach Flower Remedies to be one of the most powerful tools for transformation.  I use them personally in an ongoing way and also in my sessions with clients.  I see the benefit of the remedies as essentially being three-fold:

1)   The Bach Flower Remedies provide vibrational and energetic support that facilitates a strengthening of our overall energy field; this is the case with all flower essences, which in some ways work similarly to homeopathic medicine.  This type of support is critical in the world we live in today where we encounter toxic, unbalanced and chaotic energies often on a moment by moment basis.  Finding ways that stabilize our energy fields is necessary for us to move into a place of greater authenticity, wholeness and soul purpose.

2)   The Bach Flower Remedies in particular are one of the best tools I have found, both personally and professionally, to support balance in the emotions and the emotional energy body.  Each specific remedy addresses an emotional state or personality trait that is out of balance or is taking us out of alignment with our soul purpose.  The remedies bring in a positive energy or vibration to help transmute a negative feeling or state.  For example, if we are experiencing fear, a remedy that would address that might bring in the quality of peacefulness or calm to our energy field and begin to transmute our feelings of fear.  In a sense, this is very similar to working with affirmations, except we are benefitting from the vibrationally energy of the flowers and mother earth’s vibrational force.

3)   One of the other reasons I feel so strongly about the Bach Flower Remedies as a tool for transformation is the process of self-reflection and deepening in a self-awareness that arises as one works with the remedies.  I often utilize a Bach Flower assessment as the primary discovery process in my work with clients as it provides a clear, workable framework for identifying patterns, feelings and beliefs an individual is carrying.  Also, this is a very collaborative process and it gives an individual the opportunity to self-reflect and self-identify areas of imbalance or disharmony in their lives.  Both through assessment and actually working with the remedies as a treatment, individuals deepen in self-awareness and begin to cultivate their own process of transformation and healing.

Last month we focused on Pine, which is the remedy of the inner critic.  This month’s remedy is Rock Water, which can have some overlap with Pine; many of the remedies do have crossover properties and subtle variations, as we do as human beings.  Interestingly, Rock Water is the only one of the Bach Flower Remedies that is not actually a flower but rather is water from a natural spring that is protected by nature and unaffected by our modern world; it is often known as a healing source.

According to Dr. Bach, Rock Water is indicated for:

“Those who are very strict in their way of living.  They deny themselves many of the joys and pleasures in life because they consider it may interfere with their work.  They are hard masters to themselves.  They wish to be well and strong and active, and will do anything, which they believe will keep them so.  They hope to be examples which will appeal to others who then may follow their ideas and be better as a result.” (The Twelve Healers, p.23)

In a previous post, From Comparison To Compassion, I compared Larch, Pine and Rock Water, in relation to patterns of perfectionism, which is clearly a key component of the Rock Water type that is evident from Dr. Bach’s description above.  It is these very high standards and ideals that drive someone with a Rock Water personality or pattern to push so very hard.  One of the biggest patterns someone needing this remedy exhibits is a feeling that there is always pressure that something needs to be done.  This is so strong, to the degree that a person is really never feel able to relax fully.

In addition to perfectionism is another aspect, which is actually the pattern of “Drive” itself.  There are several remedies, which we might include in a category of drive remedies; this includes Rock Water, Vine, Vervain and Impatiens.  Being driven is something that can be an asset and is certainly viewed as a strong point is our society.  However, just like everything else, our “drive” needs to be in balance.  If we are too driven, we can easily deplete our energy and may not be able to achieve our goals and even if we do, we may not be able to enjoy them as we proceed on to the next task.  For this reason, Rock Water types may be known as “harsh taskmasters unto themselves.”

As I shared in the overview of the remedies above, balance is a key component in transformation, healing and living a life of joy and ease.  Rock Water is highly beneficial in returning a person who is over-driven, steeped in perfectionism, high standards and rigidity to a place of balance and ease.

Here are some questions to help consider if Rock Water may be beneficial for you:

  • Are you extremely hard on yourself?
  • Do you push yourself really hard?
  • Do you have enough fun?
  • Do you always feels pressure that something needs to be done?
  • Are you strict in your way of living, denying yourself many of the joys and pleasures of life?
  • Do you have very high ideals, standards and expectations?
  • Are you a perfectionist?
  • Do you experience mental rigidity?
  • Do you believe that worldly desires inhibit spiritual development?
  • Do you experience a lot of tension and stress in your physical body?
  • Do you tend to adhere to a particular dogma or discipline even when it is not really working for you or causing considerable distress?

Some of the positive qualities that the Rock Water remedy may bring include:

  • Adaptability
  • Open-mindedness
  • Realistic expectations
  • Balanced self-discipline
  • Ability to relax and enjoy life more fully
  • Becoming kinder and gentler with oneself
  • Learning to have fun

It’s funny that I felt to bring this remedy in just as summer begins.  It feels like the perfect time to let go a little and if this remedy seems beneficial, it could be a great exploration to see what “fun” Summer might be like with a little less pressure to get it all done.  Also, it is often in heat of summer that we go into the water to cool off and refresh.  The Rock Water remedy offers us a way to let go on an inner level, to relax and refresh, and become more fluid with the flow of life, like water itself.

One of the areas of focus on The Heart Of Awakening Blog this year is Transforming The Inner Critic.  Our inner critic or negative voices can keep us from accessing our true essence and allowing our authentic selves to emerge.  As we work with May Is For Metta 2013 and particularly in cultivating loving-kindness and compassion for ourselves, it is not uncommon to unearth or come face to face with our critical voices.  There are many practices and techniques that can support the transformation of our inner critic including meditation, affirmations, self-reflection, creative explorations and additionally, the Bach Flower Remedy Pine can be helpful in this area.

It is interesting that essentially the Bach Flower Remedies work similarly to our practice in that they are helping to bring a positive quality or vibration into our energy field.  In Metta, we are doing this with the energy of loving-kindness and compassion.  In working with other affirmations, we may be choosing a particularly quality such as love, peace or joy.  The Pine remedy brings in the qualities of Self-Esteem, Self-Forgiveness, Self-Acceptance, and Self-Love.  By flooding our energy field with these positive vibrations we are thereby transmuting the negative or imbalanced aspect self connected to this remedy.

As someone who has tended to have very strong Pine tendencies, I can attest that this remedy is incredibly beneficial in transforming our inner critic.  It is a journey I continue to work on and that is part of the inspiration for our theme of Transforming Your Inner Critic Into Your Inner Cheerleader.  I have also seen Pine to be of great help to others in this area through my holistic healing practice.  Although this remedy can be beneficial for anyone, I have found that in working with individuals recovering from trauma, abuse and addictions it seems to be a core pattern and one that needs to be addressed to support healing and transformation.

Pine is indicated for people who feel full of guilt and self-reproach; they blame themselves for everything that goes wrong, including other people’s mistakes.  They feel undeserving and unworthy.  Often, their guilt complex and feelings of shame are not necessarily based on any actual wrongdoing but the power of these feelings literally destroys any possibility of joy in living.

“Pine” people appear humble and apologetic; they will apologize for being ill and may feel they deserve their illness of pain.  They are the folks who say, “I’m sorry”, all the time, even when they haven’t done anything wrong.  In some way they seem to be apologizing just for being.

This weekend I participated in an author panel for Inspired Voices: True Stories Of Visionary Women, a collaborative book that I am a contributor in.  When Andrea Hylen, founder of the Heal My Voice project, read the Introduction to the book aloud, I was struck at how her words seem to sum up the Pine pattern and how it can be transformed.  The piece is about her experience living in community with a roommate.  Here is what she read:

“One funny thing was how we both had a habit of saying “I’m Sorry”.  I even said it to a piece of furniture one day when I bumped into it. Our time together shone a spotlight on “the nice girl” syndrome.  Constantly saying “I’m Sorry,” is a way we diminish ourselves and hold onto perfectionism.  “I’m sorry I am breathing and talking up so much space in here.” “I am sorry I did something and you may not like me.” I am sorry I am human, imperfect, and have lessons to learn.”  By the end of our four months together we could laugh and joke about it and discover when to say it FOR REAL and when there was nothing to be sorry about.  All is well.” 

Working with Pine can help us become aware of this “I’m Sorry” pattern and begin to shift into the experience that “all is well” and  that however we are and whatever we do, we are still deserving of love and acceptance.  It becomes clear that the only one holding us to these unrealistically high standards and expectations is our own self.

One of the indicators for a remedy is that the pattern or issues are present or as we say in Bach talk, “at the surface” on a daily basis.  There may be times when one remedy is indicated more than another and this is a way to assess.  We also have 1 or 2 type remedies, which tend to be ones we work with throughout our lifetime.  Either way, as we become more conscious and aware of our patterns, we deepen in our process of healing and transformation.   Here are some questions that may help to indicate if Pine is beneficial:

  • Are you a harsh judge of yourself?
  • Do you tend to be extremely self-critical?
  • Are you never content with your efforts or the results of what you do?
  • Even when you are successful, do you feel you could have done better?
  • Do you carry strong feelings of guilt and shame even when you have done no wrong?
  • Do you tend to blame yourself even when others make mistakes?
  • Do you have high ideals or expectations for yourself?
  • Do you feel you deserved to be punished?
  • Do you tend to pick on yourself with negative or critical voices?
  • Does your incessant effort to improve yourself lead to fatigue or despondency?
  • Do you feel undeserving of love?

The Pine remedy brings in the vibrational quality of Pine, which allows people to accept and love themselves, to release negative judgment or self-criticism and be open to living life in a more joyful way, free of unrealistic standards and expectations.

Some of the potential for transformation that emerges with the use of the Pine remedy can include:

  • An ability to forgive oneself.
  • Being able to feel regret rather than guilt.
  • A deeper understanding of human nature and what it is to be human.
  • Greater patience.
  • Self-Acceptance.
  • Owning and accepting one’s faults without judgment or harsh criticism.
  • A release of feelings of shame.
  • Increased energy.
  • Becoming able to set reasonable expectations.
  • Deepening in Self-Love.

Affirming, “I love myself, just as I am” or “I forgive myself, for I have long since been forgiven” is the essence of Pine.
